CSB+SJU Scholarship for French Majors

The Dr. and Mrs. Joseph B. Gaida French Scholarship

French majors and minors enrolled at the College of Saint Benedict who will be juniors or seniors in the fall are invited to apply for the Dr. and Mrs. Joseph B. Gaida French Scholarship for the following academic year. Recipients will be chosen on the basis of scholarship, strength of academic purpose, and financial need (determined by consultation with the Financial Aid Office). The scholarship amount varies from year to year averaging between $3000 and $3500.

Applications are to be submitted electronically by email to Jenn Schwichtenberg with the following:

  1. A letter to the Gaida French Scholarship Committee stating your academic purpose (approximately one page, in English).
  2. Include with the letter a one-page Vita in French, which is a short resume highlighting your past activities pertinent to your French studies.
  3. Write a one-page essay in French explaining your studies up to this point, your plans for further study of French, and how you see French studies continuing to be meaningful in your future professional goals.
  4. Include an unofficial copy of your transcripts.

The deadline for submitting completed applications is to be determined each year; recipients are notified in early April. Selection is made by a committee of faculty members from the French Studies Program of the Department of Languages and Cultures.

France

The French studies program provides the environment and opportunity to develop, refine and perfect fluency in the French language while also examining the cultures and conditions of Francophone countries. Students will gain appreciation of literature, theater and cinema, with the French language as a common thread.
