Year of Graduation: 2013
I am a 4th year medical student at the University of South Dakota, interviewing for residencies in pediatrics.
Why major in History?
After I chose the pre-medicine track, I wanted to study something unrelated to science to get more variety in my classes. After taking European History with Dr. Schroeder in the fall of my sophomore year, I knew I had made the right choice.
My history thesis examined the social programs available to Native Americans in Minneapolis in the 1960s, and that research still helps me understand the many Native American patients I see now. My history major has helped me stand out both as a medical school applicant and residency applicant.
"After you graduate from college, when you tell people that you were a history major, they look at you differently. They take you seriously and recognize you as a person who is truly well educated." ~Margaret Free
