Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I chose to study abroad because I’ve always had a passion for traveling. I knew that studying abroad would give me so many opportunities to experience new countries, cultures, and environments. I had always dreamed of studying abroad so I jumped at the opportunity. I chose Austria because I love nature and hiking, and Austria is home to the Alps and many beautiful nature scenes. I had so many opportunities to hike in ways I’ve never done before. I also chose Austria because I got the opportunity to learn about a political system different from the United States during my time abroad. This was extremely educational, and I learned things I’ll be able to use with my major and future career.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your program that made a lasting impression.
One of the most impressionable experiences I had with the Austrian culture was meeting the Krampus. Krampus are Austria’s evil Santas. They are said to punish children who misbehave. They are scary looking with masks and horns and big furry suits. They will grab you out of the crowd and beat you with a stick. I woke up with a few bruises. I couldn’t help but imagine how something like that would never happen in America. Some people were scared of the Krampus but I found them super cool and was grateful I got to experience the Austrian Christmas culture in that way. I will never forget that experience.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
One of the major benefits of studying abroad is personal growth. You are essentially forced out of your comfort zone. You have to be self sufficient and independent. You make friends but essentially you are relying on yourself. You will grow so much as a person and leave being self reliant and open to new things. I have became a much more adventurous and independent person post study abroad. I was also able to increase my knowledge of politics on an international scale which I’m extremely grateful for.
What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
Do it. I can’t even count the amount of times I’ve heard someone tell me “not studying abroad is my biggest regret.” Don’t let yourself regret it. I promise you will leave knowing it was one of the greatest experiences of your life.
