Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

My sister and many friends had studied abroad and strongly encouraged me to go. They all talked about how fun and impactful their study abroad experience was, and it was something I needed to see for myself. I decided to study in Italy mainly because the classes offered there worked out in my 4-year plan. Rome was also an easy place to travel elsewhere in Europe from, and I wanted to see many places outside of my base city of Rome.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your program that made a lasting impression.

In Rome I had the opportunity to volunteer at a local soup kitchen. This was very impactful as I had the chance to both volunteer with and serve local people. This gave me a much more authentic feel of the culture and I was able to have some very cool conversations with local people about life in Rome.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

Being abroad, you really learn a lot about yourself and learn a lot about the world around you. I think studying abroad really helped expand my worldview and helped me develop into a much more mature person and gave me a new and enhanced perspective.

What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. Take risks and really get to know the people on your program.
