Program: Italy Semester
Major: Biology (Pre-PA)

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I wanted to study abroad to widen my worldview. I had never been out of the country before. I knew study abroad could be feasible at CSB and SJU no matter what your 4-year plan is. I chose this program because I have always been interested in the history and culture of Italy. My great-grandmother is Italian, so this led me to wanting to learn more about the country.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your program that made a lasting impression.
The cultural experience abroad makes you see your surroundings differently. We were in constant exposure by being fully immersed in the culture of Italy. Something that has stayed with me is the experience a group of people including myself had in a market. The way people communicate with each other and how there is a presumption on how to behave. The way societal expectations are is vastly different than those in America. I got a lot better at being more self aware and observant that so many people function in different ways.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
There is an extensive list of benefits to studying abroad. It forces you to adapt to new surroundings and circumstances. It allowed me to achieve many attributes at once for the Integrations Curriculum. It also helped me as an aspiring healthcare worker to develop a greater understanding of new cultures. This will directly transfer to the care I give my future patients. Studying abroad lets you grow outside of your comfort zone. It allowed me new perspectives and new personal abilities that I am very grateful for.
What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
If you have any wish to study abroad, do it! It may seem financially or academically impossible, but study abroad is possible for all sorts of CSB and SJU students. Work at applying to CSB+SJU scholarships and outside scholarships. Speak with the CGE office and discuss with your guardian(s) about making this dream come true. You can do it!
