Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I chose to study abroad because I knew I would never get the opportunity to live and study abroad again. I knew I wanted to take this chance while I could. I chose Italy because I have dreamed of going there ever since I was little. Living in Italy for the entire semester was truly a dream come true.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your program that made a lasting impression.

I was able to take a Food and Culture class while abroad. We had a professional chef come in and cook us traditional meals from different regions of Italy. I loved being able to learn about each region of Italy and how they are different from each other rather than generalizing Italy as the whole country being the same.

I also loved observing the cultural differences between the countries I traveled to. I visited Greece, France, Croatia, and Spain. Being able to taste the different traditional foods and have a first-hand view of the people in each country was so cool. Each country has different ways of interacting with people and how they live their lives, which was super cool to be able to learn about.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

Getting yourself out of your comfort zone, meeting new people from CSB and SJU as well as students from other colleges around the U.S., and learning more about your host country. Study abroad allowed me to grow so much as a person. I came back more independent, confident, and equipped with more life skills. Because I took the leap and pushed myself out of my comfort zone, I am confident I can handle whatever life throws at me, whether that be in my personal, academic, or professional life.

What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

Say yes to everything! If you are on the fence about going abroad, just do it. You absolutely will not regret it.
