Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I chose to study abroad because I wanted to broaden my worldview and strengthen my independence. I decided on this program because it had so much to offer. The location was excellent for traveling to other places in Europe at a reasonable price. The London program also offered an internship opportunity that was very appealing to me. Another big factor was that citizens in London mainly speak English. However, it is such a big city and melting pot that it was a perfect program to expand my cultural experience and independence.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your program that made a lasting impression.
During my time in London, I had the opportunity to work at LISH London where I experienced British culture. Their workplace culture and overall traits were very different from what I previously had experienced in the U.S. This made a lasting impression on me because it really broadened my views of the British culture.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
I was in London for an entire semester. I think this benefited me because I became very immersed in the British culture. My flat felt like home and not a vacation getaway. It depends on the person, but culture shock and homesickness are a real thing when studying abroad. A short-term program abroad could lead to not experiencing these feelings as much as a whole semester. Personally, while studying abroad I became very independent and more outgoing. Academically, I was challenged with a different style of teaching and was able to learn a lot more about different cultures. Professionally, I was immersed in a British workplace culture and gained valuable skills including adaptability.
What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
My advice is to do it! It is worth it and will benefit you in so many ways! You will be able to experience people, places, and things that are truly unforgettable.
