Program: Austria Fall Semester
Major: Vocal Performance
Minor: Theology & German
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I just knew I wanted to study abroad because I am always working towards bettering myself and my professional opportunities, and what better way to do so than studying abroad? I chose Salzburg, Austria because my family lived Germany for a bit in 2011. I love the German language, and I wanted to experience more of Europe.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
Learning about the political, social, and historical dynamics of the many nations and modern-day countries both in and out of class. In particular, traveling to Poland, Hungary, Croatia, and Bosnia over 10 days allowed me to experience different people and histories while being able to compare them.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
It was absolutely invaluable. The people, country, lessons, and experiences were all so perfectly aligned to allow me to grow personally, academically, spiritually, and socially.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
Spending a semester allowed me to truly settle in, get to know Salzburg and our group, experience true independence and responsibility away from home. I know I can deal with many stressful situations and people, as well as recognizing the differences people can bring to discussions. My world view has been expanded in subjects such as politics, philosophy, music, social dynamics, religion and spirituality, culture, and language.
What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
You will not regret it! It is challenging in all the best ways, and so life-giving in all the most unexpected ways.
