Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I knew I wanted Study Abroad to be part of my college experience very early on. I think seeing different parts of the world and interacting those people who have entirely different backgrounds is integral to becoming a more understanding and informed person. I decided to study in France, because of the language opportunities, as well as the desire to gain a first person understanding of such a prominent culture.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

I didn't realize the importance set on food and sharing meals with others. Some of my favorite memories from my time abroad are of my friends and I spending hours at restaurants without feeling rushed to leave so another group could have our table.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

It's hard to describe an experience as complex as living abroad. I know it's one of the best things I've ever decided to do and if I had to choose a word, it would have to be transformative. Being abroad pushes you in ways it's difficult to experience and gave me a better perspective on how I want to live my life

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

There are many, many benefits to spending a semester abroad. I personally feel more confident in my own abilities and like a more well-rounded person. Academically, I was able to improve and appreciate my studies in the French language. Professionally, my time abroad opened my eyes to different ways to live life and how many varying paths can be fulfilling.

What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

The advice I have for others thinking about studying abroad is to take advantage of time and to try to get out of your comfort zone! It goes by very quickly and many of the opportunities are once in a lifetime, so don't let yourself leave wishing you would have done more!
