Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
When choosing a college I knew I wanted to study abroad. As a Hispanic Studies major I knew I wanted to go somewhere I could practice my spanish. I had never been to Chile and I knew it would be an amazing experience, plus I heard great things from students who went the year before.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
I think our group had an especially unique experience in that we were present for national protest. With all that happened, we had a lot of discussions in class and were surrounded by all kinds of many kinds of peaceful protest that I think was very inspiring to me and my classmates.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I had an amazing experience in Chile. My spanish improved immensely and I learned a lot about the culture from my host family, teachers, and peers. Our group went on multiple excursions that were not only beautiful but helped me learn a lot about the country.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
I think living in a new place, especially with people I didn't know, helped me grow a lot. I became much more independent and became more confident. Abroad I had no choice but to speak to local people to help me figure things out, like directions, etc so I am more comfortable seeking out help now than I was before.
What advice can you offer for CSB+SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
Although expensive, I would argue that study abroad is worth the experience. Additionally, it provides opportunities to make connections in other countries. No matter what your major or goals are, if you take advantage of your resources it is rather easy to make these connections.
