Teresa is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Spain
Major: Global Business & Hispanic Studies
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I chose this program because of it was one of the required items for the completion of my Hispanic Studies major. However, I would've chosen this program whether it was required or not because I wanted to learn more about Spanish culture. I loved the idea of living with a host family & being able to travel a lot within Spain itself.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
Having a host family. Everyone in our group had wonderful experiences with their families and this is what truly makes this program so special. I still remain in contact with my host family and I consider them a second set of parents.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
Overall, I loved my experience. I loved having a small group, staying in a smaller city. I loved getting to know the city we were in and making it our new home. It was so fun to find all of the hidden gems of such a small town.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
It's extremely eye opening. I loved getting to know and live and experience an entirely different and new culture than mine. Study abroad has helped me to develop ideas and new realizations about the world we live in. I have such a better global perspective (good for both of my majors) that I never would've gotten if I hadn't left.
What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
Do it. There is no better opportunity than to study abroad. Most people think it's not in their price range but it's VERY affordable & doable. Don't let money stop you. Scholarships are available for those who need it, plus you won't be paying the price for room & board that semester & most of the time studying abroad replaces that price almost exactly.
