Matthew is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Chile

Major: Economics, Hispanic Studies

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I chose to study abroad in Chile to experience living in a new country and to strongly improve my Spanish speaking, listening, and reading abilities.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

Playing on the University's basketball team brought me close with my Chilean teammates. I learned a lot about Chilean culture while playing basketball with them and also off the court.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

Living in Chile was the best four months of my life, and leaving was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. The entire experience was incredible. I improved my Spanish abilities, I grew as a person, and I had a lot of fun. Chile was awesome.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

You become more independent living so far away from home for so long. You also meet a lot of people, and you gain a better perspective on how the world works and how not everything is the same.

What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

Do it.
