Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I knew that i wanted to participate in a program that was focused on spanish, and after doing more research I was very intrigued with the academic part of this program, but also the culture and lifestyle of Guatemala.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

My host family definitely made a lasting impression on me. They took me in as a true part of their family, including me in everything. I would say one thing in specific that was a cultural experience would be a birthday party that we had and just all the festivities that go along with it.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

I had an absolutely wonderful experience abroad in Guatemala. I love the school/learning aspect, the lifestyle and the countless opportunities that we had to explore what we are interested in. The community is so welcoming and embraces you fully.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

It makes you grow as a person. You struggle so much especially in a country that is not english speaking, that it makes you find yourself, makes you realized how many opportunities that you are given as an American, and shapes the way you think about the world.

What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

DO IT! It is one of the best experiences you can have, in a somewhat controlled environment, allowing yourself to explore and change.
