Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I knew that Chile would give me the best opportunity to practice and enhance my Spanish speaking skills while working towards my major. It also seemed like an amazing opportunity to safely travel to South America and experience the culture there.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

Living with a host family made me feel like a part of the community in the city I was living. I quickly felt like I was a member of the community and was learning the language at a faster pace than in the classroom. I met lots of friends this way and it really enhanced my experience abroad.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

It was the best experience of my life so far and I would not trade my experience for anything. I had the opportunity to work in a school as an assistant teacher and this was an amazing experience for me that gave me the opportunity to go back in the future.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

You are given the opportunity to learn a new language, learn about a new culture, meet other international students, and explore other countries while living abroad. It is a truly incredible experience and you learn so much while living on your own in another country. The friends I made while I was there are my best friends today and I am so blessed for my time in Chile.

What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

If you choose to study abroad, really immerse yourself in the culture by spending time with the locals and volunteering your time. It will teach you so much about the community you are living in and you will come home with new insights that you couldn't get another way. It is a truly incredible experience that I think everyone should have.
