Program: China Fall Semester

Major: Art

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I chose to study abroad to get a better insight of the difference of culture and the experience of being and living in a different country than America.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

The difference of ethnic clothing that the people wore left a good impression because each type of clothing is meant to be worn for a specific or religious purpose to reflect their individual ethnicity all over China.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

My overall experience of this study abroad program was magnificent because of the people I went on this program with along with the professor, alumnis that visited us in China. The food was great. The excursions that we did were awesome especially in Yunnan Province which shows a different view of China like the mountains and clear blue skies unlike the big city life in Beijing. Meeting other students from other countries and becoming friends with them. Our language buddies were the best as they helped us with anything that we needed. The professors were very nice and helpful to us in and out of the classroom. And so, my experience in China was the best thing I had ever experienced in my life.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

The benefits of studying abroad is the connection between two countries and by seeing the differences, we can help to understand and make a better difference for future generations. Also, you get to see a different part of the world as you're not in the USA. You also get to know the difference between American and Chinese professors in how they teach as well as the classroom set up/expectations.

What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

My advice is that if you have or given the opportunity to go abroad, take that chance for it will change your life and how you see the world differently through your eyes rather than that of a screen. You get to experience the difference in culture, food, lifestyle, clothing and the people of that country.
