Joshua is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Chile

Major: Economics

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I chose to study abroad because I wanted to experience a different culture and have the opportunity to live outside of the US. I didn't originally choose to study in Chile but in the end that's how it worked out and I loved it.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

Living with a host family was the best cultural experience I had. I learned all about the different holidays and rituals that go along with being Chilean and had the opportunity to experience that first hand. Also living with a host family improved my Spanish speaking abilities.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

Studying in Chile was amazing. I lived with a host family, which helped me experience a lot of fun cultural aspects that I wouldn't be able to experience living on my own. Going to the University with Chilean students was an incredible experience as well, it helped me meet a lot of Chilean friends. I will never forget the landscape
of Chile. I lived a few blocks from the beach and an hour from skiing mountains. If I could go back I would leave right now.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

Being abroad helped me see the world in other peoples shoes. It took me away from the small town Minnesota and made me realize that there is a lot more to the world than I know. I now have more respect for other peoples cultures.

What advice can you offer for CSB|SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

Do whatever you can to study abroad. Its the most amazing experience I have ever had. Once you get abroad do whatever you can and don't worry about spending all your money because paying for experiences on the trip is something that you won't ever forget.
