Jamie is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Galway

Major: English

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I have always been interested in living outside the United States for an extended period of time. I picked the Galway-Ireland program because of the location, on the Western coast, and the excursions built into our time abroad.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

I remember meeting with a Creative Writing student from NUIG, the local university. We went to the coffee shop in Spiddal and talked for a few hours about writing styles, cultural differences and how our programs were similar. It was an incredible experience to meet someone who was studying the same concepts as me but halfway around the world.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

I had an amazing, unforgettable and unique experience. If I could go back in time, before I left, the only thing I would change would be figuring out a way to stay longer!

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

I have a better understanding of the challenges when travelling, but I feel confident in myself that I can navigate new experiences now. I feel prepared to travel on my own and I feel like I can use that confidence in my future field of study to find a job I can travel in.

What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

A journal is the best thing you can carry and a roll of scotch tape is the second. When I was abroad I picked up maps, ticket stubs, stickers-any thing I could find and taped it into my little journal. Its my favorite souvenir and it traveled with me everywhere.
