Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I chose this program because Greece and Italy have always been places that I have wanted to travel. I knew some people who had gone on past trips and was able to talk to them more about it too. What really stood out to me in choosing this program was the opportunity to live and study in two different countries throughout the semester.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

A specific cultural experience that I will never forget from study abroad was our first week in Greece, it had been the birthdays of a few people on our program. A good number of us had been going to a local coffee shop mentioned to us by past groups and the owners had gotten to begin to know us. They heard about the birthdays and that Thursday night set up a large space with snacks and decorations for all of our group to celebrate. Although we were just getting to know these people they were so kind and welcoming, they explained that it was the culture of Greece to be this way and wanted to show us that we were like family to them.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

My study abroad experience was incredible, I still cannot put into words how amazing it was. I will forever be grateful for everything that went into planning and organizing this trip and I am so thankful for all of the experiences and people I have been able to meet through this program.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

Benefits of studying abroad are the ability to immerse yourself in another culture, becoming more confident in yourself and your abilities, developing new friendships, global understanding and new perspectives of the world, and appreciation for things we take for granted at home. Overall I think that the biggest thing that I have gained from study abroad is being more comfortable and confident in myself. I have noticed myself not being as guarded and quiet as I was before, this will help me in all aspects of life; personal, academic, and professional.

What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

If you are even slightly considering study abroad, find a program that works in your schedule. CSB/SJU makes study abroad so accessible for students and it is unlike anything else you will ever do!
Also, keep a budget! Start one before you leave and keep up with it! Even if it is just tracking your spending anything is helpful.
