Chandler is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Italy and Greece
Major: Global Business Leadership
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I decided to study abroad to get a broader view of the world we live in. I wanted to experience cultures other than my own and experience other traditions and celebrations those cultures. I chose to go on the Roman-Greco trip as for I got to experience two cultures in one semester. I also chose Roman-Greco for the large amount of core curriculum class that can be completed while abroad.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
One cultural experience that I took advantage of everyday is the large amount of fresh foods, such as fruits and vegetables, offered in the local markets and grocery stores everyday. Unlike in America, Italy has a far less number of processed goods. This allows you to make very delicious fresh meals each and everyday.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
My study abroad experience is one that I will remember for the rest of my life. I will not only remember the memories but the experiences that changed me as a person and my outlook on life. I have a much broader understanding of our world and how it works outside the United States. I have a new perspective of the culture that I was raised in and the values that I hold with me. Study abroad forced me out of my comfort zone in many different situations but it taught me so many life lessons that I will remember and use for the rest of my life. It has given me the confidence to take on tasks and other challenges that are presented to me in life.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
1. Getting the opportunity to live in a culture other than your own
2. Being able to see how businesses work in a different area of the world
3. Learning about the history that formed that culture allowing you to have a broader understanding of the world
Study abroad has made me a far more independent person. Traveling the world without your parents shows you how you can do anything you want to. It has given me a different perspective on life and being able to understand how other cultures function and practice different than ours.
What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
Jump in! Don't hold back. Take advantage of each opportunity because the trip will go fast. If there is something you want to do, see, or experience, do it! Being in a foreign country at such a young age can impact you in so many ways that you never imagined so be open to trying and accepting new things. Go in with an open mind and a positive attitude and it will turn out to be one of the most amazing experiences of your entire life.
