Amanda is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Fiji
Major: Accounting and Finance
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I choose to study abroad for the experience of being outside my personal bubble and I wanted to go somewhere that nobody had gone before. The Fiji program was new, and it gave me a new place to go.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
While in Fiji we got to visit several villages. But there was one in particular that really hit home. The villager that we got to talk to was a female with a child very far from home. So, she reminded me of my mom and gave me a glimpse into what my mom might be feeling, about how I am so far from home.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
It was positive, I encourage anyone who is thinking about studying abroad, for any amount of time, to do it. It is worth the time, effort, and money. You will not regret having lived, or visited another country.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
Some if the benefits that I have found have been, I am more worldly, I look at things differently and with a more open understanding of what it could be and not what it should be.
What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
Do it, don't be afraid. I know that it is hard not to be afraid, but you won't regret it. Also if it means that you won't graduate on time so be it. I was against the whole idea when I was a freshman, and then as I grew through the help of my professors and peers I became more open to the idea. And that idea lead to a great experience. So now I want to continue to have great experiences. So go out there and have a great experience.
