Program: Ireland-Cork Spring Semester

Major: History

Minor: Political Science

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I decided to study abroad in order to broaden my horizons and to experience new things. I decided on the Cork program because it allowed me to be flexible with the classes, and it also allowed me a greater sense of independence that I wanted in a study abroad program.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

When I was learning how to play traditional Irish music on the Concertina while at the University, I felt connected to the music of Ireland, which I also think helped me get closer to the Irish culture.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

My overall experience was fantastic! I thoroughly enjoyed the freedom given to me by the Cork program, and I enjoyed the academic experience of new classes taught in different styles than at CSB/SJU.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

I think the biggest benefit of studying abroad is that it helped me be a more self-sufficient person, and helped me have more confidence in my own abilities. Academically, the new classes taghut in new styles made me be more flexible and adaptable in how I approach my studies as a student.

What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

While planning is important, I think part of the experience is finding your own adventures that you didn't plan for. Make sure you plan enough to be safe, but also go into some situations open-minded and ready to experience new and exciting things.
