Participants are required to take this internship for at least 1 credit, but earn up to 4 credits at the summer rate.
Shanghai is a commercial giant, a financial and cultural hub, and home to the largest container port on Earth. Translation: there’s no better place to expand your business knowledge from a global perspective. Learn about business ethics, corporate structure, fiscal policies,, and the importance of skills like integrity and collaboration — while developing contacts that can help with future career opportunities.
On this program, CSB/SJU has partnered with CIEE to allow you to spend 8 weeks in China completing a non-paid internship placement within a wide range of opportunities across a diverse set of innovative industries. During your placement will be assigned to an internship project with a company in Shanghai. You’ll be encouraged to share real issues impacting your internship placement while participating in the course. The course is taught in an online learning environment, complemented by a number of on-site curricular activities, such as site visits, workshops, and guest lectures. Classes, co-curricular excursions, and/or work hours may be scheduled Monday-Friday, and attendance is strictly enforced for all. To avoid falling behind, you should not plan personal travel away from the city when your internship is in session.
CIEE Shanghai. CIEE Shanghai is located along the bank of the Liwa River on East China Normal University’s downtown Putuo campus, known as the “Garden University” for its beautiful grounds.
Program Cost & Financial Considerations
The estimated program fee is $6,650. Additionally, students will pay the cost of 1-4 CSB/SJU credit(s) at the reduced summer tuition rate (estimated at $635 per credit).
The program fee includes:
- Housing while the program is in session
- Program administrative costs and fees
- Breakfast is included daily
- Visa fees for entry into China
- CISI Medical & Evacuation along with iNext Insurance
The program fee does not include:
- Passport Application fee ($145)
- Non-program travel or housing
- Lunch & dinner meal expenses
- Resident Permit Fees
- Personal expenses
The Short-Term Abroad Financing Brochure includes estimates for the items not included in the program fee. If accepted in the Global Fellowship Program, a $1,000 Fellowship award is applied to your program. If accepted as a Global Fellow, you are not eligible for other Center for Global Education scholarships, but you are eligible for other external scholarships.

While on this program, you will stay in student hotel-style accommodations, with shared double room with another US college student. Housing includes laundry facilities, internet access and is convenient to public transportation and East China Normal University (ECNU). Established in 1951, ECNU is one of China’s key institutions of higher learning and the first to specialize in teacher education. Nationally known for its Chinese language and literature program, the university enrolls more than 29,000 full-time students, including 5,000 international students.
