Dr. Emily Berg Paup is currently the Program Director for the Gender Studies Minor.
Her home department is the Department of Strategic Communication Studies where she specializes in courses in both their Public Advocacy and Leadership concentration and their Public Relations, Advertising, and Marketing concentration. She is also an Honors Scholars Faculty Fellow.
Dr. Berg Paup began teaching at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University in 2012. She specializes in the intersection of communication, gender, rhetoric, and politics. She holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication Studies with a focus in Rhetorical Studies from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and a B.A. in Communication from Boston College. Her teaching focuses on how gender, race, and identity are negotiated in the public sphere, media, politics, and everyday life, with a particular emphasis on First Amendment rights, political communication, and public discourse. Her research focuses on the history of marginalized voices in presidential politics, women in leadership, gender and political campaigning, and issues surrounding political and social advocacy. She also writes about ongoing debates related to freedom of expression.
