Brigit Stattleman-Scanlan '21 (she/her/hers)

Where do you call home?

Madison Wisconsin

What are your majors/minors?

Environmental Studies major, Political Science minor

What is your favorite outdoor activity?

I love most everything outdoors! Some of my favorites are hiking, canoeing, running, blading, and unicycling;)

Why did you major in Environmental Studies?

I knew that I wanted to major in something that related to social justice issues. I ended up picking ES because of how we are all related to it. We are all connected to the earth and have a relationship to her one way or another.

What is your favorite Environmental Studies class and why?

Gender and the Environment and also the UNFCCC COP class. TAKE BOTH! These classes both challenge you to see the world through a different lens. Through active engagement and discussion you are immersed in the class and the various topics. Maybe you might even find yourself protesting in Spain?

What environmental issue are you most passionate about? Why?

I am most passionate about environmental justice, more specifically focused on climate justice. Climate change disproportionally affects those already marginalized within society first and worst. In order to solve the climate crisis, climate justice must be at the forefront of all policy.

What was the focus of your research for ENVR 320? What were yourorderfindings?

I focused on the "sustainability of conferences", where I researched the impact these large events and gatherings have on the environment, while also considering the impact they have on the attendees themselves.

What advice do you have for first year students and majors?

Show up! Go to class, engage in discussion, talk to your professors, go to club meetings, attend events and get involved! You will meet the most amazing people and make the most of your time here!

When in doubt, dance it out!
