Education Club Constitution
Article I: Name and Purpose
Section 1: Name
The name of this organization shall be the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University Education Club, referred to as the CSB/SJU Education Club.
Section 2: Purpose/Mission
The purpose of the Education Club of the College of Saint Benedict/St. John's University is to promote the teaching profession and enhance the learning opportunities provided by the Education Department. The club brings educational speakers to campus and provides opportunities for volunteering and service. Additionally, the club offers a great community which fosters professional development as future teachers collaborate to develop a better understanding of the teaching profession.
Article II: Membership
Section 1: Eligibility for Membership
Membership of the CSB/SJU Education Club shall be composed of the students enrolled at either CSB or SJU who have declared an education major or minor and/or those who are interested in the teaching profession. Non-students cannot be members.
Section 2: Voting Member Criteria
N/A – The only voting that takes place is the voting of new officers, and the removal of officers, which is done by the Executive Officers.
Section 3: Removal of Members
N/A –There are no requirements for our members, they participate in events and attend meetings at their own discretion. Therefore, we have no grounds to dismiss members.
Article III: Officers
Section 1: Officer Qualifications
All officers must be declared Education majors or minors at CSB/SJU and must commit to a full year of service.
Section 2: Elected Officers
The officers of the CSB/SJU Education club shall be President (Department of Student Activities contact), Vice President (Joint Club Board (JCB) contact), Treasurer (Co-Funding Board (CFB) contact), Secretary, Elementary Education Representative and Secondary Education Representative.
Section 3: Duties of Officers
President:
- Preside over Education Club Representative meetings
- Arrange for a time a location
- Plan and assign agenda for meetings
- Assign and delegate duties
- Send out and respond to Education Club Emails
Vice President:
- Responsible for assuming the duties of the President in the absence of the President.
- Advertise for club events
- Update email distribution lists
Treasurer:
- Handle Education club account: money for events and purchases
- Keep the Education Club budget: monthly audits
Secretary:
- Take minutes of Education club meetings
- Update bulletin board
- Make sure class announcements are completed
- Handle book orders
Elementary Education Representative:
- Attend Elementary Education Department meetings
Secondary Education Representative:
- Attend Secondary Education Department meetings
Section 4: Vacancy in Office
Vacancies shall be filled by elections of candidates drawn up by the executive board except in the case of the President where the Vice-President will succeed automatically. This election shall take place at the meeting immediately following the vacancy with new officer’s term to last until the end of the school year in which elected.
Article IV
Section 5: Removal of Officers
Any officers may be removed from office by a petition stating the cause of removal by one-third of the officers and by a two-thirds majority vote of all the officers after hearing the petition.
Section 6: Appeal of Removal of Officers
The officer up for removal may write a statement pleading his or her case. They will then present it to the current officers who shall reconsider his or her removal. The officers shall debrief and revote (two-thirds majority vote = removal).
Article IV: Elections
Section 1: Nomination Process
Education club members shall nominate themselves by responding to the “election” email sent at the beginning of a new term. (Self-nomination)
Section 2: Election
After members have nominated themselves and responded to the application questions, the applications shall be read by the current officers. The current officers shall vote (secret ballot), votes shall be tallied, and the officers shall come to a consensus. The term of office for all officers shall be for the two consecutive semesters of the academic year. All elections shall take place by April 1 and the Department of Students Activities shall be notified of the new officers.
Section 3: Special Elections
Vacancies shall be filled by elections of candidates drawn up by the executive board except in the case of the President where the Vice-President will succeed automatically. This election shall take place at the meeting immediately following the vacancy (within 2 weeks of vacancy occurring) with new officer’s term to last until the end of the school year in which elected.
Article V: Advisor
Section 1: Selection
The advisor will be appointed by the executive officers and approved by the chair of the Education Department.
Section 2: Duties
The Education club will have a faculty advisor who attends both monthly and executive board meetings.
Article VI: Meetings
Section 1: Regular Meeting/Club Activities
There shall be regular meetings during the academic year, all of which shall be open to the entire CSB/SJU student body. Activities include; Teacher/ Student Teacher/Administrative Panels, Guest Speakers, Dr. Seuss Day, Child Care, and volunteer opportunities. Meeting and activity notifications shall be made through email, flyers, and the Education club’s bulletin board.
Section 2: Special Meetings
Special meetings will be held directly before events and when otherwise needed. Executive Officers will be notified by both email and phone call by the president.
Section 3: Parliamentary Authority
Executive officers will state the issues that need to be addressed. From there each member/officer can freely give his or her input. The secretary will take the meeting’s minutes.
Section 4: Quorum
Twenty percent of the membership shall constitute a quorum.
Article VII: Committees

Article VIII: Finances
Section 1: Co-Funding Board
The Education Club will not apply for CFB monies.
Section 2: Honorariums
No honorariums will be given to any club officer or member.
Section 3: Dues (optional)
Members are not required to pay dues.
Article IX: Amendments
Section 1: Ratification
This Constitution may in the future be amended or revised by two-thirds majority vote of the members present at any regular meeting provided a quorum is present. Members will be notified of changes made to the constitution at the first meeting of the academic year.
Section 2: Submittal to Department of Student Activities and Joint Club Board
Any changes made to this constitution must be submitted to the Department of Student Activities and the JCB.
Article X:
The Education Club admits students without regard to their race, religion, color, sex, age, sexual orientation or national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and other activities, generally accorded or made available to members of the organization.
Article XI:
The Education Club considers hazing to be a degrading and destructive activity which is inconsistent with the standards of this student organization. The Education Club recognizes the dignity of every person and opposes all forms of hazing.
Article XII:
The Education Club agrees that its activities, mission statement and goals are consistent with the Benedictine Values.
