As we reach mid-term in spring semester, it is time for students to start looking ahead and considering their options for housing in the 2017-2018 academic year. The Departments of Residential Life & Housing at CSB and SJU thought it would be helpful to give you some information as your sons and daughters approach you for advice in regard to their housing decisions for the upcoming year. As part of our commitment to providing an engaging and developmental four year residential experience all students are required to live on campus.
Room Selection will take place in April following class registration for Fall 2017. To be eligible for the room selection process, returning students are required to be registered for the next term. Students must be registered for fall classes at least 24 hours in advance of the room selection night they wish to participate in takes place.
It is also helpful to understand how students are assigned selection numbers and selection times. Room Selection numbers are assigned to students randomly within their respective cohort groups. Cohort groups are comprised of the group of students who began college in the same year. For example, the rising senior cohort group will be comprised of all students who began college for the first time in the fall of 2014, the rising junior cohort group will be comprised of all students who began college for the first time in the fall of 2015 and the rising sophomore group will be comprised of the students who began college for the first time in the fall of 2016. Numbers will be assigned randomly within each cohort so that all rising seniors have an equal opportunity at senior housing, this is also true for the juniors and sophomores, respectively. The student and any roommates choose housing at the best time for their living group. Students must have full living groups formed for fall semester in order to select housing.
Please coach your sons or daughters as they decide whom to live with next year. Just because someone is a good friend, does not automatically mean they will make a good roommate. Encourage them to take the time to select someone who has similar habits and values as related to sharing a room. Help your son or daughter think about what they need to create an environment that is comfortable, safe, enjoyable, and a place where they can focus on their work.
Details regarding Room Selection will be emailed to students and can also be found online at:
Is your student Abroad in the fall? They will NOT go through room selection. They will receive information and be asked to complete a questionnaire before the end of this academic year (between April 15 and May 1) regarding their preferences and requests for spring housing. Also, you and your student should be aware, the Off Campus Process for the following academic year will take place while they are away. If they want to apply for Off Campus Release in 2018-2019 they should make sure they are familiar with the off campus process now. They should Ask any questions they may have now so that they can work with friends from all corners of the globe next year as they apply for a release. As always – they should never sign a lease unless they have an Offer of Release.
