Returning Students - Housing on campus

The Department of Residential Life & Housing at CSB thought it would be helpful to give parents some information as your daughters approach you for advice in regard to their housing decisions for the upcoming year.  As part of our commitment to providing an engaging and developmental four year residential experience, all students are required to live on campus.

Room Selection will take place in April following class registration for Fall 2020. To be eligible for the room selection process, returning students are required to be registered for the next term. Students must be registered for fall classes at least 24 hours in advance of the room selection night they wish to participate in takes place.

It is also helpful to understand how students are assigned selection numbers and selection times.  Room Selection numbers are assigned to students randomly within their respective cohort groups.  Cohort groups are comprised of the group of students who began college in the same year.  For example, the rising senior cohort group will be comprised of all students who began college for the first time in the fall of 2017, the rising junior cohort group will be comprised of all students who began college for the first time in the fall of 2018 and the rising sophomore group will be comprised of the students who began college for the first time in the fall of 2019.   Numbers will be assigned randomly within each cohort so that all rising seniors have an equal opportunity at senior housing, this is also true for the juniors and sophomores, respectively.  The student and any roommates choose housing at the best time for their living group. Students must have full living groups formed for fall semester in order to select housing.

Please coach your daughters as they decide whom to live with next year. Just because someone is a good friend, does not automatically mean they will make a good roommate. Encourage them to take the time to select someone who has similar habits and values as related to sharing a room.  Help your daughter think about what they need to create an environment that is comfortable, safe, enjoyable, and a place where they can focus on their work.

Is your student Abroad in the fall? They will NOT go through room selection. They will receive information on spring housing and be asked to complete a questionnaire before the end of this academic year (between April 15 and May 1) regarding their preferences and requests for spring housing.

Details regarding Room Selection will be emailed to students and can also be found online at:

Please be aware, the Off-Campus Process for the 2020-2021 academic year is complete. Following the room selection process, groups of seniors may add their names to waiting lists for off campus exemptions, however please do understand that it is rare for there to be any exemptions offered following selection. That said, the only way to be considered is for students to add their name to the waiting lists. The room selection waiting list link is sent out after room selection is completed.

Also, please be aware, the Off-Campus Process for 2021-2022 will take place in the fall of 2020. Those who will be seniors in 2021-2022 may apply for the off-campus process and seek an exemption from the residency requirement. This process takes place each fall (October to November) for the following academic year. Applying to the process is not a guarantee of exemption. Requests from those seeking exemption are due October 15 each year. Students should not sign any leases for housing off campus without an offer of exemption to live off campus! Offers of exemption will not be made for the 2022-2022 academic year until November of 2020.
