For this Saint Ben’s alumna, the road to discovering her purpose has been both challenging and fulfilling. Mary Valvoda Lunneborg ’76 was first in her family to attend college, and her journey began with determination and a leap of faith.

She chose to attend Saint Ben’s and, though uncertain about her future, pursued her interests in government, history, and sociology with enthusiasm. Aiming for a career in law or public administration, she even took the LSATs but later found her true calling in education—a decision inspired by her family and life experiences.

In the early 1990s, her world shifted when her two young sons were diagnosed with autism. Raising them required unwavering commitment, and she became deeply involved in their education and support. Her advocacy evolved into a career as a paraeducator and, later, a teacher. Encouraged by colleagues, she returned to school to earn her teaching license and master’s degree, which opened the door to a fulfilling career in special education. Today, at 70, she continues to teach full-time, driven by her passion for helping students succeed.

Reflecting on her time at Saint Ben’s, she credits the community for shaping her resilience and belief in her abilities. One person who left a lasting impact was Sister Ingrid Anderson, her first advisor and lifelong mentor. Sister Ingrid provided guidance during challenging times, reinforcing the Benedictine values that instilled strength and determination.

Her liberal arts education at Saint Ben’s inspired a lifelong love of learning and a commitment to using her voice. She fondly recalls how the college empowered women during a time when opportunities were limited. “As a woman, I realized I could have a strong voice in the world,” she shares.

Her advice to incoming students? Embrace exploration and don’t feel pressured to have everything figured out. To graduating students, she encourages them to continue learning and growing, no matter where life takes them.

What does she value most about Saint Ben’s? The enduring sense of sisterhood. She treasures the connections made at reunions and the shared identity of being a Bennie. “No matter our paths, we are brought together by that one thing: we are Bennies.”

Her story is one of perseverance, service, and the enduring impact of the Saint Ben’s community. It’s a testament to how education, determination, and support can shape a life filled with purpose and achievement.
