Campus Departure Plan Form Information

Do I need to complete the campus departure plan form?

All students must complete the campus departure form by November 20. The form must be completed to trigger a prorated refund of housing and meal costs, if applicable, and to activate ID cards for residence halls for the appropriate times.

Options for After Thanksgiving Break

If I choose to stay on campus for November 30-December 18, what can I expect?

Complete the campus departure form. To limit the spread of COVID-19 both onto and from campus, students who return to campus will be expected to stay on campus between November 30 and December 18, unless they become ill. Campus services may be reduced to focus on academic activities. The mitigation measures put in place on November 5 will continue. See details here. Mitigation measures may be further restricted at any time.

If I choose to leave campus now and plan to return to campus for spring 2021, what should I do?

Complete the campus departure form. You will need to depart campus by Wednesday, November 25 at 6 p.m. Please follow the checkout process that has been established by the Department of Residential Life & Housing and will be communicated separately. We ask you to prepare for a variety of scenarios, including thinking carefully about what belongings you may need between now and your return to campus on January 25. To ensure campus safety, your card will be deactivated and will no longer allow access into the residence halls after checkout.

CSB students released from isolation or quarantine after November 25 can contact [email protected] to get your modified checkout deadline. Unless otherwise arranged, you will have 48 hours to complete checkout.

If I choose to leave campus now and plan not to be on campus for spring 2021 (graduation, transfer, internship/capstone, approved exemption), what should I do?

Complete the campus departure plan form. You will need to depart campus by Wednesday, November 25, at 6 p.m. You will need to follow the checkout process that has been established by the Department of Residential Life & Housing and will be communicated separately. Please remove all belongings from your space at the time of checkout. Your card will be deactivated and will no longer allow access into the residence halls or other areas of campus after checkout.

If I choose to depart campus now, will I receive a refund for room and meal costs?

If you choose to depart campus, housing and meal costs will be prorated starting November 29 as long as 1) you complete the campus departure form by November 20 and 2) you complete the check out process by November 25. Refunds costs will be applied to spring semester expenses.

Students who violate policies and/or return to campus unauthorized may forfeit their pro-rated credit.

Students who are graduating, transferring, withdrawing, or are approved for a housing exemption for spring 2021 will see a credit on their account.

If I have already left campus but need to get my belongings, what should I do?

Complete the campus departure plan form. We will be in touch with you to schedule a date and time to retrieve your belongings. Once you retrieve your belongings or the deadline has passed, your card will be deactivated and will no longer allow access into residential areas or other areas of campus until the beginning of spring semester.

I am a student living locally. What should I do?

You do not need to complete the campus departure form. You are not eligible for a room or meal refund. Read through the “Campus Life After Thanksgiving” section of this FAQ. See details here.

I am an international student. What should I do?

Complete the campus departure form. We will continue to support you to make sure you have the ability to get home or remain safely on campus, as you chose. You will continue to have support from the International and Intercultural Student Services offices.

International students are allowed to take classes from home/off-campus and still be in good SEVIS status; current policy is extended until December 31.

Residential Life & Housing
Will the residence halls be open during and after Thanksgiving break?

CSB residence halls and apartments will remain open during and after Thanksgiving break. Students who want or need to stay on campus may choose to do so. Use the campus departure plan form to indicate your plans by November 20. All mitigation policies designed to slow the transmission of COVID-19 that were introduced November 5 will remain in effect through the end of the semester.

If I choose to leave campus, will I be able to use my student ID to get into the residence halls and apartments?

Once students leave campus, student IDs will be deactivated. Students who choose to leave campus are not allowed to enter the residence halls or apartments.

Will my RA/CA and/or professional staff member be available during and after Thanksgiving break?

Professional and student staff members in Residential Life will be working through the end of the semester.

Who can I contact if I am having an issue while on campus?

CSB Security is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 320-363-5000. Residents can also reach out to their residence director or area coordinator by stopping by their office, calling or emailing. Resident Assistants and Community Advisors are on duty in each residential area each night from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. the following morning.

Will guest policies change during and after Thanksgiving break?

The changes to the guest policy put into place on November 5 will remain in place through the end of the semester. Visitation outside of your own hall/building is not permitted. No campus or outside visitors.

Can I still use the lounge and other common spaces?

Lounges and common spaces should not be used for large gatherings, but can still be used for watching TV, studying, attending class remotely, or working on projects. Even if a student is alone in a lounge or common space, they should still wear a mask, and be attentive to social distancing expectations should another person enter the space.

How often will bathrooms be cleaned?

CSB custodial and facilities staff will maintain their current cleaning schedule through the end of the semester. Students are also encouraged to use the provided wipes to clean bathroom areas after their use, and to practice good hand hygiene and masking in the bathrooms.

If I choose to stay on campus during and after Thanksgiving break, do I stay in my room?

Yes. Unless a student has been directed by the Student COVID Coordinator team to quarantine or isolate in a different location, residents remaining on campus will stay in their assigned room/apartment. If students need to consolidate/move into different housing, information will be sent out at a later date.

Keys & Checkout

If I choose to depart campus now, what are the checkout deadlines?

Students who wish to receive a prorated credit of room and meal costs must complete the campus departure plan form by November 20, and checkout by 6 p.m. on November 25. Instructions for the check-out process will be provided via email and via door tags.

What if I choose to depart campus at Thanksgiving break, but I need to checkout after November 25?

Students who choose to depart campus at Thanksgiving break but cannot depart campus on or before the November 25 deadline will need to request an extension on the campus departure form. Extensions will be very limited.

Where do I turn in my room keys?

Place keys in the drop box located outside of your RD/AC’s office. Put the keys in the yellow key envelope and fill out the information on the label of the key envelope. Then, seal the envelope and place it in the drop box.

Do I need to turn in my room keys if I plan to come back in spring?

Yes. To ensure building safety, and the safety of your belongings, we are asking all students to return their keys. See question above for more info on where to return your key.

Do I need to take all my belongings with me?

We ask you to prepare for a variety of scenarios. Consider all the belongings you may need between now and your return to campus in January. If you are not returning to campus for the spring and storage is needed, please email [email protected].

What do I need to do to check out of my room?

CSB students who indicate they are departing campus on the campus departure form will receive door tags with a detailed checklist of how to complete the checkout process in addition to an emailed checklist.

What should I do if I already left campus and have my keys?

Will the residence halls be open during and after Thanksgiving break?

Saint John’s University residence halls and apartments will remain open during and after Thanksgiving. Students who want or need to stay on campus may choose to do so. Use the campus departure form to indicate your plans by November 20. All mitigation policies designed to slow the transmission of COVID-19 that were introduced November 5 will remain in effect through the end of the semester.

If I choose to leave campus, will I be able to use my student ID to get into the residence halls and apartments?

Will my RA or Faculty Resident be available during and after Thanksgiving break?

At this time Faculty Residents and RAs will be available through the end of the semester.

Resident Assistants and Faculty Residents will still serve as the primary point of contact for non-emergency purposes. If there is a medical or facilities emergency, students are instructed to call Life Safety Services at 320-363-2144.

Students may return their keys to their RAs. RAs will have envelopes for resident keys. Residents will need to write their name, building and room number on the envelope. The Residential Life and Housing staff will date the envelope when the key is returned. Students who do not return their keys may not be eligible for a full pro-rated credit. For students who will not have an opportunity to meet with their RA, SJU Housing will have a central drop-off location for students to return their keys in appropriately labeled envelopes.

Do I need to turn in my room keys if I plan to come back in spring?

Yes. To ensure building safety, and the safety of your belongings, we are asking all students to return their keys. Key return is essential for safety and security reasons. Additionally, any pro-rated credit will be contingent upon returning your room key.

Quarantine & Isolation


Health Services & COVID Testing

Will CSB/SJU still have the free COVID testing event on November 18?

Yes, campus-wide testing will still be available at CSB and SJU on Wednesday, November 18. Students can make an appointment for a free test at https://www.csbsju.edu/forms/MPX8XKKRSQ. Students who test positive will be directed to return home. COVID Coordinators will work with individual students for whom this is not possible.

Will Health Services and COVID-19 testing still be available after Thanksgiving?

Yes. Service hours may be adjusted.

Off-Campus Transportation

If I choose to stay on campus during and after Thanksgiving break, will there be regular transportation to grocery stores/Walmart/mall on a regular basis?

Information will be forthcoming.

Will there be transportation to the airport? What days/times will transportation to the airport be available?

Shuttles to the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport will be provided Saturday, November 21 – Wednesday, November 25, and Friday, November 27-Sunday, November 29. Reservations are required and must be made 48 hours in advance of departure.

The shuttle will depart from CSB at 7:45am and from SJU at 8:00am. Students departing from CSB must be at the Gorecki bus stop no later than 7:40am. Students departing from SJU must be at the Sexton bus stop no later than 7:55am. We anticipate the shuttle will arrive at the airport at approximately 10:00am (depending on traffic, road conditions, and weather).

I am an international or out-of-state student. Will there be financial support for me to travel home?

We hope to be able to support you though financial assistance is limited. CSB international students who choose to leave campus can contact Marcia Mahlum, [email protected] (320-363-5992) to discuss their circumstances and needs. Requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Academics & Accommodations

Will there be in-person classes after Thanksgiving?

All courses will delivered remote/online from Monday, November 30 through Friday, December 4. In-person academic courses and music lessons will continue after December 4, if appropriate social distancing and masking can be maintained.

I have a course that is delivered in-person, but I want to go home and take the class online. What should I do?

Talk to your faculty member. Courses will continue to be delivered using hybrid pedagogy where possible.

I have concerns about distance learning due to a documented disability. What should I do?

Student Employment

Can I work on campus after Thanksgiving break?

Students who return to campus after Thanksgiving break – or live locally – can continue to work after Thanksgiving break. Students should speak with their supervisors to let them know they will be available to work and to set a schedule.

If classes are remote the first week after Thanksgiving, will I be able to work on campus?

Students can continue to work the first week after Thanksgiving, even if classes are remote.

Will I be able to work remotely/online?

Students who are living in Minnesota can work remotely/online if their employer has work that can be completed remotely. Students should speak with their supervisors to determine if their work can be done remotely.

Out-of-state students will not be permitted to work remotely due to payroll tax requirements.

Am I an essential worker? How will I know?

Essential workers will be notified by their supervisors if they will be allowed to remain on campus. Examples of essential workers may include Residential Life student staff, Security staff, and Dining Services/Culinary staff.

I work on the other campus. Will the Link Bus be running between campuses?

Campus Life After Thanksgiving

Who is allowed on campus after Thanksgiving?

Those students who choose to stay on campus between Thanksgiving break and Christmas break must complete the campus departure plan form. Once students leave campus, we discourage students returning for non-essential activities.

Will there be events and activities on campus?

Will the fitness centers be open?

No. Per Executive Order by the Governor of Minnesota, all campus gyms and rec centers within the state are closed for general use, beginning at 11:59PM on Friday, November 20. This includes the fitness centers at CSB and SJU, which will remain closed through the end of the semester.

Will athletics still have practice?

No. No athletics or in-person extracurricular practices will take place during this period.

Yes, at @SJUfaith on Instagram and Facebook. In-person Mass will continue to be available for those students remaining on campus, as mitigations allow.


Spring 2021

Will we be open for spring 2021?

CSB and SJU plan to resume classes as scheduled on Monday, January 25.

I plan to return for Spring 2021. Will CSB/SJU be able to pick me up from the airport?

I want to live at my permanent home address for spring 2021. What should I do?

CSB students who feel like they have a significant, unique, or extenuating circumstance related to COVID-19 and want to request to live at home for Spring 2021 should complete the Housing Exemption form. Requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and exemptions are not guaranteed.

SJU students who feel like they have a significant, unique, or extenuating circumstance related to COVID-19 and want to request to live at home with a parent/guardian for Spring 2021 may submit an appeal. Appeals will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and exemptions are not guaranteed.
