October 6: Spring Semester 2021 Study Abroad Announcement – Faculty/Staff

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I write with an important update on the status of spring 2021 semester study abroad programs.  The Center for Global Education (CGE) continually monitors the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and governmental health ministries to guide study abroad programmatic decisions.  CGE uses data from these organizations to update the global travel and health assessment for each spring semester study abroad program site.  Given this data, we have already cancelled the Australia, Guatemala, and South Africa spring 2021 semester programs.

After careful consideration and evaluation, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the remaining CSB/SJU spring semester 2021 study abroad programs.

The decision to cancel these programs was based on many factors, that include:

  • A growing trajectory of COVID-19 cases: CGE extensively reviewed the World Health Organization COVID-19 dashboard and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control primary criteria for international health advisories for our semester programs.  Given ongoing data trends, we foresee no potential scenario where these risk indictors will decrease soon.
  • High risk travel advisories: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the U.S. Department of State Travel Advisories remain elevated for all of our program sites.
  • Centers for Disease Control Guidance: The CDC continues to advise Institutions of Higher Education against student international travel programs due to “unpredictable circumstances, such as travel restrictions, challenges returning home, and challenges accessing health care while abroad.”

We know this is a disappointing decision for our students who were planning to spend the spring semester abroad, but we must take these health and travel risks seriously to ensure safety.  Please know that in addition to health and safety, we proactively made this decision so that students can fully participate in registration for spring 2021 on-campus classes as well as student housing.

The CGE team is contacting students who were planning to study abroad in the spring 2021 semester to discuss their options moving forward.  Please note that our 2021 short-term study abroad programs (spring 2021 embedded programs with anticipated travel May 2021 and our 2021 summer programs) are still moving forward as planned.

While study abroad is not a possibility this coming spring semester, we continue to look forward to the future.  To that end, CGE will be hosting two one-hour sessions on October 13 and October 16 geared for faculty and staff on how to advise students for future study abroad.  The sessions will focus on general study abroad advising tools as well as study abroad in the new Integrations Curriculum.  Please watch the Daily Bulletin for more details.

Thank you for your continued support of our students.  Should you have follow-up questions, please feel free to reach out to the CGE team at [email protected]
