August 24: Fall 2020 Return to Campus Update #5 to CSB Students

A message from the CSB Student Senate

Hello Bennies,

The CSB Senate is excited to welcome you back on campus!

This summer has been packed full of meetings, initiatives, and lots of planning.

As we enter into our wonderful yet different school year, there are a few things that you should keep in mind.

We, as Bennies, are being called upon to truly change what the word community can encompass.

Community is “a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.” We are the students that have the ability to create our meaning of the word community through actions and behavior.

Senate is committed to creating a steppingstone for what we, students, faculty, staff, and those who live in St. Joseph could do to create a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

We have created a document titled “Call to Action” in response to the murder of George Floyd. This is your opportunity to foster an anti-racist and inclusive environment for all, in accordance with the Benedictine Values. You can find this document in your emails or on the CSB Student Senate webpage.

Your words and actions have a bigger impact than you think. Thus, it is crucial that we enter this year with grace and an open mind.

Faculty and staff have worked countless hours to ensure that we can return to campus and have dedicated a great portion of time to becoming an anti-racist community.

So here is what we ask from you:

  1. Be considerate

You are not the only one on campus. There are many factors that play into us returning to campus. With that being said, we ask that you encourage others around you to acknowledge and respect that we are in the middle of a pandemic and some people cannot afford to be sick, especially those who are compromised.

Wear a mask.

Socially distance.

Avoid large gatherings.

You can have fun this year while doing all three!

  1. Enter with grace

This year is full of new things. Let us consider those things opportunities to learn and grow in a unique way, under completely different circumstances. This is new to EVERYONE.

No one is accustomed to these ways yet!

Enter this year with an open mind and open ears.

  1. Take care of yourself and check in on those around you

This time is chaotic and stress inducing. A pandemic (+ quarantine), begging for social justice, and a lot of things being taken away, is not easy, and no one is expecting this to be easy.

As Bennies, we should support each other. Reach out, ask for help, take a break, and do anything to ensures that you are healthy.

CSB Senate is always a place to come for anything and everything.

Please do not hesitate to reach out via email at [email protected] or through any of our social media accounts.

Sending joy, love, and peace,

CSB Student Senate
