June 8: Block Schedule with Hybrid Learning Announcement

Dear CSB/SJU students,

I hope you, your family, and your friends are healthy and safe. Each of you proved integral to this spring’s shift to online learning and, given all circumstances, I believe the academic year was a success, thanks to your openness and dedication to learning.

To plan for the 2020-2021 academic year, the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University have developed a planning team composed of representatives from across our institutions with the goal of safely bringing students, faculty and staff back to campus in fall 2020. The CSB and SJU Senates have been great partners in providing feedback and anticipating students’ questions and concerns.

After careful examination of the safety parameters that COVID-19 demands, CSB/SJU have decided to shift to a block schedule with hybrid learning (flexibility for simultaneous virtual and in-classroom participation) for academic year 2020-2021.

This plan supports connected and purposeful learning and development, which reside at the heart of the CSB/SJU experience, even within the uncertainties of COVID-19. The block schedule reduces the number of classes students take at one time, while providing an engaging and intensive learning experience, and hybrid learning allows for the integration of online and in-classroom learning. This plan focuses on safety and flexibility, with consistency for students across disciplines. Watch a video to learn about the block schedule with hybrid learning.

We are working with the Registrar’s Office and Academic Advising to shift your current class registrations to the block schedule so there will be fewer registration details for you to manage.

While this is only one of many decisions supporting our ability to return safely to campus in the fall, we believe it is an important step to reshape a safe and thriving community. We will continue to keep you updated as additional information is available. Find the latest details under FAQs for Students on the COVID-19 web page. Submit questions via this form, and we will do our best to address them in a timely manner.

The entire CSB/SJU community is excited to welcome you in fall 2020 and committed to ensuring you have a successful year.

Community always,

Barb May
Academic Dean
