June 8: Message to CSB Parents

Dear College of Saint Benedict families,

I hope this email finds you doing well. Please know that each of you, especially your daughters, remain in my heart and in my prayers during this challenging time.

Families, each year you invest in us a sacred trust when you enable your daughters to attend the College of Saint Benedict. We know that this decision is a significant commitment for your family and we endeavor, daily, to fulfill our mission with your daughters. Each day Bennies prove the value and relevance of thinking critically, leading courageously and advocating passionately. We do this transformational work within and outside of the classroom. And, as you know, our Catholic and Benedictine residential liberal arts experience ensures your daughters’ growth and development in all she does.

As we plan for next year, ensuring the health and safety of your daughters and our faculty and staff has been our uppermost priority. To plan for the 2020-2021 academic year, the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University has developed a planning team composed of representatives from across our institutions with the goal of safely bringing students, faculty and staff back to campus in fall 2020.

After careful examination of the safety parameters that COVID-19 demands, we have decided to shift to a block schedule with hybrid learning (flexibility for simultaneous virtual and in-classroom participation) for academic year, 2020-2021.

This plan supports individual learning and development, which reside at the heart of the CSB/SJU experience, even within the uncertainties of COVID-19. The block schedule reduces the number of classes while providing an engaging and intensive learning experience, and hybrid learning allows for the integration of online and in-classroom learning. This plan focuses on safety and flexibility, with consistency for students across disciplines. Watch a video to learn about the block schedule with hybrid learning.

We are working with the Registrar’s office and Academic Advising to shift your daughter’s current class registrations to the block schedule so there is little, or no, registration details for her to manage.  While this is only one of many decisions affecting our ability to return safely to campus in the fall, we believe it is an important step to reshape a safe and thriving community. We will continue to keep you updated as additional information is available. Additional details are available under FAQs for Students on the COVID-19 web page

As we approach the 2020-2021 academic year, I find myself filled with hope. Hope that we will continue to grow and learn as a community. Hope that your daughter will continue to use her voice and her passion to make the world a better place. Hope that each of us finds and embraces our unique purpose in life. Hope that our world finds healing.

The entire College of Saint Benedict community is excited to welcome your family in fall 2020 and to ensure a successful year. As always, we are here to support you. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have questions, concerns, or need additional information. Thank you for the opportunity to serve your family.

Sincerely,

Mary Dana Hinton
