March 12: Commencement Message

Today, Minnesota’s Governor Walz announced significant changes in COVID-19 protocols within the state, including those regarding large gatherings of people. The new guidance represents a significant easing in restrictions, recognizing lower COVID-19 case numbers and more vaccine availability across the state.

We are pleased that the new protocols will allow the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University to offer commencement programs for the Class of 2021 this spring that more closely resemble traditional ceremonies. We will be revising the commencement proceedings and schedule announced on February 22, including for the Class of 2020.  The purpose of commencement is to celebrate our students’ success and their families’ pride, and we are delighted with the new possibilities. We will communicate new arrangements to our students and parents soon.

These new protocols are a welcome development, and we thank Governor Walz for his leadership. We look forward to safe and celebratory commencement ceremonies!

Sincerely,

Laurie Hamen, J.D.
