March 11 Spain Announcement

Dear CSB/SJU community,

Today, after careful evaluation, the Provost’s office made the very difficult decision to suspend our 2020 Spring program in Segovia, Spain.  The Spain study abroad students will depart Spain by March 18th and return to their U.S. home residence to complete the academic portion of the Spain program remotely.

The health and safety of our students is our top priority.  This decision for the Spain program was made based on the following information:

  • While the U.S. Department of State and CDC alert levels for Spain remain the same at this time, the Spanish government has increased containment measures to control the growing COVID-19 cases in the country.  The Spanish Health Ministry is now asking the public to avoid all non-essential travel at this time.
  • Our academic partner in Segovia, IE University, has extended the suspension of all in-person classes and activities until at least April 14th.
  • We are also aware of several peer institutions that have arrived at the same difficult decision to close Spain study abroad programs in Spring 2020.

Please know that we continue to monitor the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Center for Disease Control, and the local health ministries for all of our Spring programs.  Currently, these health agencies have not elevated the risk for other program locations.  We also stay in communication with our international partner schools, and the other campuses/programs remain open for academic work.

Thank you for your support of our Spain study abroad students at this time.

Sincerely,

Kevin Clancy
