Saint John’s University Student Information
The SJU Commencement will take place outdoors on May 16 at 2 p.m. at Clemens Field at SJU. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors to the Haehn Campus Center (HCC) Fieldhouse at CSB with graduates only and no guests.
There will not be a rehearsal held prior to commencement. Please follow the directions specified here regarding what is needed of you the day of your ceremony.
Each graduate will have an assigned seat. Your seat number will be the same whether the ceremony is held at Clemens or the CSB Fieldhouse. Please bring that number with you the day of commencement. (Reference the email sent to all grads from Academic Affairs on 5/10/21 for your seat number.)
Assigned Arrival Time
We ask graduates to arrive during their designated time (perhaps even a few minutes early) to allow for everyone to be in their assigned seat prior to the start of the ceremony.
For the outdoor ceremony at SJU Clemens Stadium, graduates will enter Door 1 of the Palestra following the signs to exit Door 17 into the stadium. Ushers will be available to assist you in finding your seat on the turf.
If the ceremony is moved indoors, graduates will enter the Haehn Campus Center upper level, using the stairs that will take you down to the lower level to the Fieldhouse where ushers will be available to assist you in finding your seat.
- 1:10 p.m. arrival – 1-200 odd seat numbers
- 1:20 p.m. arrival – 200-400 odd seat numbers
- 1:30 p.m. arrival – 1-200 even seat numbers
- 1:40 p.m. arrival – 200-400 even seat numbers
Order of Exercises
A commencement program will be placed on each graduate’s chair. Inside the program you will find the order of the ceremony. Please stand when the processional music begins, the platform party will process onto the stage and remain standing until you are asked to be seated.
Receiving Your Diploma Cover
Each row of graduates will be signaled by an usher when to stand and move onto the west side of the track to walk to the stage. Once you arrive at the base of the stage ramp, wait for your name to be read, then walk up to the president who will hand you your diploma cover. Please wear your mask to receive your diploma. As you leave the stage area, an usher will direct you to get your photo taken where you can remove your mask for the photo. Ushers will then guide you back to your seat.
Ushers will be available to assist in the graduates’ recession out of the stadium. Please do not leave your seat until your row has been dismissed. You will recess out single file starting with the front row, exiting Clemens Stadium through the Palestra and Door 1. As you exit the Palestra please continue to move away from the building to allow the rest of the graduates and guests room to depart. Graduates can meet their guests on Abbey Road (it will be closed to traffic).
