Concussions
Concussions are very serious and can have long-term effects on a person's ability to function on a daily basis, attend and/or complete coursework, and compete. CSB is committed to the prevention, identification, evaluation, and management of concussions.
Campus Recreation Staff will annually present to student-athletes education material on concussions. New athletes on Figure Skating, Ultimate Frisbee, Lacrosse, and Rugby Club Teams, are required to complete a baseline concussion test. A release form will be signed at this time of testing authorizing communication between CSB Health Services and CSB Campus Recreation. It is required each athlete have one baseline test on file for the four years the athlete is a student at CSB. Please coordinate this testing with Erin Ross.
Signs and Symptoms of concussions include, but are not limited to:
- Headache
- Inability to focus
- Loss of consciousness
- Delayed verbal or motor skills
- Visual disturbances
- Feeling like "in a fog" or dazed
- Confusion or disorientation
- Ringing in the ears
- Amnesia
- Irritability
- Dizziness or balance problems
- Emotional Sensitivity
- Slurred or incoherent speech
- Fatigue or feeling slowed down
- Vomiting
- Excessive drowsiness
- Vacant Stare
- Sleep disturbances
If you believe you have suffered a concussion:
Set up an appointment with a Nurse Practitioners at CSB Health Services (363-5605)
- They may refer you out to another clinic for further testing and evaluation
- Feel free to review the Concussion Care Plan which outlines the Return to Learn/Return to Play protocol used by the Nurse Practitioners
- The Nurse Practioner will notify Erin Ross when an athlete is being seen for a concussion. Erin will then email the athlete and coach what the athlete can/cannot do for activity at this time. Athletes cannot return to play (practice or competition) until Erin Ross receives return to play clearance from the Nurse Practitioners and has notified the athlete and coach.
