Biosafety Waste Management

Generators of biohazardous waste bring sealed, filled biohazard bags to NSC 229 for autoclaving weekly or at the conclusion of the laboratory experiment, whichever comes first. While collecting waste, the bag should be sealed when not in active. Red bags are only used for human blood and body fluids. Orange bags are used for non-human biohazardous waste. Once autoclaved the orange bag can be put in the trash. After autoclaving red bags, the bag is placed inside an orange bag before it is disposed in the trash.

The biology department safety committee designates the autoclave supervisor.

Filled biohazard sharps containers should be sealed and brought to NSC 229 where they will be collected until picked up by an outside agency.
