Name: Maureen Handoko
Maureen Handoko is a senior majoring in biochemistry as part of her pre-medicine program. She has been accepted to a highly competitive M.D./Ph.D. program at the University of Minnesota.
Maureen is from Indonesia, and discovered the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University when her brother, who is a year older, decided to come to here for school. Since there are some significant weather differences between her warm home and her college—where snow is frequent and sometimes significant—Maureen suggests that the temperature is more of a challenge that the cultural differences.
Maureen also volunteers her time as an emergency medical technician (EMT) on the Saint John’s campus. She is on call 24 hours a week, so she has a lot of opportunities to see what will be involved in medical school. In the classroom, however, she is more interested in the research side of medicine, and she has done a lot of research while an undergraduate.
