Captain Matthew J. Scholz is from Woodbury, MN. He is a 2007 graduate of Stillwater Area High School and subsequent 2011 graduate of the University of St. Thomas (UST) with a B.A. in Business Administration.  CPT Scholz enlisted in the Minnesota Army National Guard (MNARNG) in February of 2010 as a 35F Intelligence Analyst and attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, SC in the summer of 2010.

Following graduation from UST, CPT Scholz attended Federal Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Benning, GA in the summer of 2011. In September of 2011, he commissioned into the MNARNG as a Field Artillery (FA) Officer. CPT Scholz completed the FA - Basic Officer Leader Couse (BOLC) in the summer/fall of 2012 at Fort Sill, OK. He graduated the FA Captains Career Course (FA-CCC) in spring of 2020 again at Fort Sill, OK.

CPT Scholz has served the MNARNG as both a part-time citizen Soldier and as a fulltime member as both a Dual-Status Federal Technician and in the Active Guard Reserve (AGR) program.  CPT Scholz has been assigned to the 1-151 Field Artillery Battalion, headquartered in Montevideo, MN as a Battery Fire Direction Officer (FDO), Battery Platoon Leader (PL), Battery Executive Officer (XO), Battery Commander, Battalion Fire Direction Officer, and Battalion Operations Officer. He also served the 1-151 FA fulltime as the Battalion Training Officer and Battalion Officer in Charge (OIC). CPT Scholz briefly served as Aide-de-Camp to the 34th Infantry Division Deputy Commander General-Maneuver (DCG-M).

CPT Scholz has been mobilized in support of the State of Minnesota during Super Bowl 52, the riots following the murder of George Floyd, and the subsequent trial of Derek Chauvin. He has supported numerous natural response missions as well as the Minnesota Department of Health’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

CPT Scholz is a recipient of the Army Commendation Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (3 Awards), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon, Minnesota State Active Duty Ribbon (4 Awards) and the Minnesota Service Ribbon (3 Awards). He is also a member of the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara for the Field Artillery Branch.     

CPT Scholz currently resides in Saint Augusta, MN. During his time away from the ROTC program he enjoys camping and spending time outdoors.
