May 2009 Alumnae/i Notes

Notes from Dave Mitchell Johnson '99: "It's already been 5 months since I returned from Iraq!  Next week I'll be moving from Roseau, MN to the Twin Cities.  New address will be: 10158 Grand Forest Ln/ Woodbury, MN 55129/ cell: (218)689-3838 (same as before) In early May I'll be returning to the active duty Army for one year at Fort McCoy, WI.  I will be helping to train army reserve units as they prepare to deploy overseas to Iraq and Afghanistan.  For those that can decipher army lingo, the unit I will be working for is: 3/340th Training Support Battalion/ 181st Brigade/ 1st Army." He clarifies: "I am still in the Reserves. The Civil Affairs branch of the army deploys a lot, even the reserves. Funny how life "plans" differ from what "happens."  I find myself caught up in training plans, welfare of soldiers, loyalty to my reserve unit, and responsibilities, and my "plan" has been turned upside down."

And from Cody Martin '09 comes this: "My plans are to be married to Teresa Stangler '09 who is a nursing major at CSB on June 26th, move to Ft. Sill OK until next Apr. to continue officer training, and then move to my unit in Ft. Drum NY with the 10th Mountain Division as a Field Artillery Officer. Upon finishing at Ft. Drum I will move to AZ to begin my Captains Career Course as a Military Intelligence Officer. [email protected]

2LT Johnathan '05 writes that Kelly '05 (Becker) DeWein still has 2 years remaining of her obligation to the Army and is awaiting a chance to become a civilian nurse.  "I will be leaving Clarksville to start my officer training at Fort Benning, GA.  I will be there for the remainder of this year and as of right now, will get stationed at Fort Lewis, WA.  Life has been good and full of surprises." Tim Johnson '09 will be at Ft. Lewis, WA for the month of Jul., then off to Ft. Benning, GA until at least Mar. to do Basic Officer Leadership Course - Phase II (BOLC II), Infantry Officer Basic Course (IOBC), and possibly other training schools. Likely after this training he will be (by 2010) stationed at Ft. Irwin, CA for the next couple years. [email protected]

Mark Mahowald '89 writes in reference to his and Kammey's 15th wedding anniversary that they have a 10 and a 12 year old, and spent that night on the soccer field since he coaches both. "Life is very full of activities and I am enjoying every minute of being home with them rather than with the Army.  Retirement from the USAR was a great choice at this time in our lives." [email protected]

Tim Kundinger '92 recently graduated from the Univ of Colorado, Colorado Springs with a MA in Public Administration, an emphasis in Homeland Defense.  "The Army has moved me to Ft Sam Houston, TX and I am a Medical Planner with U.S. Army North.  The new job involves quite a bit of travelling.  I have had the opportunity to link up with MAJ (P) Mark Johnson '92 at Ft Leavenworth, and MAJ Scot Doboszenski '93 here at Ft. Sam.  Scot works right upstairs from me and we reminisced about our "Glory Days" at SJU. Gina, Darrell and Rachel are still in Colorado and I am moving them down here in mid-June.  We will be living on post and I look forward to linking up with any Johnnies that might be in the San Antonio area.  Contact [email protected] , (719) 330-2919." Thanks, Tim, for the great update and the invitation to people in the San Antonio area!

16 ROTC graduates of SJU, CSB and SCSU were commissioned as First Lieutenants this year; there were 5 From St. John's, Leroy K. Christiansen, Timothy J. Johnson, Cody J. Martin, and Conor P. McKeown.  And from St. Ben's: Angela M. Carlson and Andrea R. Lieder. Congratulations!
