This year everyone's coming back to campus to reconnect. Parents and families will visit their current Bennies and Johnnies. Alums of all ages will find good times and familiar faces.

The entire weekend will be packed with events and activities, so there's sure to be something for everyone. Make the most of this chance to reconnect with our campuses, our communities and great Bennie and Johnnie friends.

Politics and a Pint - Around the World with Saint Benedict

Join the Eugene McCarthy Center for Public Policy & Civic Engagement and the Joint Events Council for the first Politics & A Pint of the year. "Around the World with Saint Benedict" explores Professor Bob Bell’s recent sabbatical trip around the world and the trials and tribulations he encountered voyaging through 20 different countries. Come learn about the profound experience of common humanity and the diversity of the wider world experienced through world travel.

Politics and a Pint is a monthly series of informal discussions on issues related to public policy and politics, that is, any type of social interaction involving decision-making.

Looking for a challenge this weekend that is also fun and good for your health? Come on over to the SJU Rock Climbing Wall! The rock wall is free for families during Family Weekend. All participants need to have signed a waiver and anyone under the age of 18 of age must have a legal guardian present. Come and enjoy a fun game of either volleyball, basketball, tennis, or just toss around a frisbee, along with the option to try a bunch of other recreational activities we have available for use! The HCC Fieldhouse is set up for anyone to just stop and participate. The Rec Desk has other supplies if you need anything else, just stop by and ask the assistant for help!


Acapella Night

The Joint Events Council is proud to announce the very talented Six Appeal will be back on campus for a special Homecoming/Family Weekend performance! Six Appeal is a world-class vocal ensemble that combines musical prowess and sharp comedic timing with the energy and vitality of a rock band. The award-winning vocal band will take you on a journey that covers multiple decades and genres of music – performing classic oldies, current chart toppers, and catchy original tunes – completely a cappella.

Despite their cheeky group name, the antics of these six young gentlemen provide a good natured atmosphere for their electrifying performance. A Six Appeal show will split your sides, feed your musical sweet tooth, and leave you wondering how in the world they pulled it off with just their voices.

CSB Dancer for a Day - Registration Closed

Cost: $50, includes a t-shirt, ticket to the game and an unforgettable experience! Pre-registration is required.

Dancers in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to participate in the College of Saint Benedict Dance Team's Dancer for a Day! This fundraiser will have dancers starting the day at the College of Saint Benedict where they will learn a routine that they will perform during half-time of the Saint John's Homecoming & Family Weekend football game.

Campus Ministry 5k Fun Run - Registration Available Onsite
9 a.m.

Cost: $25 for participants ages 15+ and $20 for individuals 14 and under; pre-registration is recommended.

CSB and SJU Campus Ministries will be hosting the 16th Annual 5K Family Fun Run. This event is a great way to explore the Arboretum at Saint John's. The 5K Family Fun Run is sponsored by Alternative Break Experiences (ABE) and all money raised supports ABE programs as well as provides scholarships for students who wish to participate in these programs.

Each participant is guaranteed a 5K Family Fun Run T-shirt! Register at least one week in advance to ensure your shirt size. Participants that register at least one week in advance can pick their shirt up at the event. Otherwise, shirts will be placed in your CSB/SJU student’s campus address. Pre-registration is recommended, but day of registration is taken at the Sugar Shack.

ABE is an ecumenical program offered through CSB Campus Ministry that provides meaningful, service-oriented trips, both nationally and internationally.

Taiko Drumming Workshop - Registration Required
10 a.m.
CSB, Escher Stage
Cost: Free, pre-registration through Fine Arts Programming is required.

Join us for this FUN, interactive exploration of Taiko drumming. No experience necessary! In this “crash course,” participants will learn the basic taiko form, rhythm and history of this ancient Japanese tradition. Capacity is limited, so sign up early.

Saint John's Abbey Church Tour - Both tours are currently full.

Cost: Free, pre-registration is required. Limit 20 people per tour.

St. John’s Abbey Church is at the heart of the St. John’s campus and community. Though strikingly modern even fifty years after its construction, it is planned according to the oldest principles of church architecture. To learn more about the history of the Abbey Church, join us for tours lead by monks at the Abbey.


Saint John's Pottery Studio Tours
10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
SJU, Pottery Studio

The Saint John's Pottery Studio will be hosting tours of the studio on Saturday. The goal of the Pottery Studio is to educate students and artists in the philosophy and practices of sustainable resource development, to involve them in a totally indigenous artistic environment in an academic setting and to assist local communities with the sustainable development of indigenous resources. Learn more about the pottery studio. Stop by the pottery studio anytime between 10:00 – 4:30 for a free 30 minute tour provided by their staff members.


Book Signing at SJU Bookstore

The Saint John’s University Bookstore is hosting a book signing o in the campus bookstore as part of the Homecoming/Family Weekend festivities. 

Don Orth, a 1967 graduate of Saint John’s University, will be signing his ten books of non-fiction related to life in Renville County, including Prairie Angels: Inspirations from Prairie People and Many Shades of Red: The Red Head Book. He was president of Hometown Bank in Olivia, having worked there for 38 years, and continues to reside in Olivia. 

Tom Palmer, a 1976 graduate of Saint John’s University, will be signing copies of Fly in Formation: One Professional Athlete’s Journey, Dreams & Bi-Polar Battle, in which he chronicles his battle with bi-polar disorder. Palmer, who waterskied professionally for thirteen years in California, owns Palmer Enterprises, is a musician with six CDs and resides in Three Lakes, Wisconsin.

Mike Shea, a 1969 graduate of Saint John’s University, will be signing copies of his book Serenity: Meditations of Acceptance, Courage, and Wisdom. Shea is part of a faith-based recovery ministry, Serenity Villages located in Crystal and New Hope, and has sent his book, a 365-day devotional, to prisons throughout the United States. Shea and his wife reside in Glenwood, Minnesota.

Join us for a delicious lunch before the football game. The traditional Chili Luncheon will take place at Guild Hall, SJU. The meal begins at 10:45 AM Saturday morning. We hope to see you and your family at this annual Family Weekend tradition!


Johnnie Football Game vs. Carleton - Purchase Tickets

Saint Benedict’s Monastery Tours - Tours are currently full.

CSB, Sacred Heart Chapel
Cost: Free, pre-registration is required.

The OSB tour includes two parts: The Sacred Spaces Tour and the Art & Heritage Tour. The Sacred Spaces Tour includes the Gathering Place, Sacred Heart Chapel (shared by the Monastery and the College), Blessed Sacrament Chapel and the Oratory. All are in one building with elevator accessibility. If time permits we can view the first floor of the Monastery and Monastery Dining Room.

The Art & Heritage Tour visits the current exhibit at the Haehn Museum entitled “It’s All God’s Work” which features the art needlework department of Saint Benedict’s Monastery, which was active for 101 years from 1867 to 1968. The exhibit gives special recognition to Justina Knapp, OSB who was director of the department for nearly 50 years. Many items of liturgical vesture are displayed as well as drawings and other exquisite embroidery.

All families should meet in the Gathering Place of the Sacred Heart Chapel. To find the Gathering place, look for the green dome of the Sacred Heart Chapel and go up the front steps. The Gathering place is right inside the doors. Once at the Gathering Place, families will be divided into groups. Some groups will do the Art & Heritage tour first and other groups will do the Sacred Spaces tour. Each tour lasts 45 minutes.


Family Carnival

The Family Weekend Carnival at CSB is truly an event for the entire family, no matter what age. Come and enjoy some friendly competition at the various booths and classic carnival games. In addition to a variety of family friendly inflatables, earn prizes from one of our game booths or from a round of bingo! The Carnival is a wonderful chance to spend family time together. See you on the CSB Mall after the football game for a memorable afternoon!


Celebration on the Tundra

Alums, Parents and Friends are invited to a post-football game social on the Tundra (just west of Sexton Commons). It’s a great spot to meet up with new and old friends and enjoy refreshments. Look for the white tent. Cash bar.
