Grace Butkowski Major/Minor: History/French Research Location: CSB/SJU Summary: I examined how 19th century British writers and artists portrayed Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots in their work. I am especially focused on how Victorian gender roles affect their depictions.
Melissa Quintanilla Major: Chemistry Research Location: Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. Summary: I used a mouse model to examine the role of genetics in chronic pancreatitis and it's progression into pancreatic cancer.
Tyler Bruinsma Major: Integrative Health Sciences Research Location: Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. Summary: My lab studied idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and pneumocystis pneumonia. My primary roles were to culture cells; care for lab animals; and assist with different aspects of experiments.
Nicole Cornell Major/Minor: Sociology/Theology Research Location: CSB/SJU Summary: I looked at different social factors that predict the likelihood individuals will utilize religious coping when faced with a significant life event stressor, such as a major surgery or terminal illness diagnosis.
Hieu Van Major: Biochemistry Research Location: University of Colorado Cancer Center Summary: My project focused on genomic changes that drive metastatic melanoma to aid in prognosis and treatment.
Keith Spinali Major: Biochemistry Research Location: CSB/SJU Summary: I worked with Dr. Wurdak to refine the marking and visualization of intercellular processes--specifically those of autophagy and apoptosis, using light, UV, and electron microscopy.
Clare Johnston Major/Minor: Chemistry/Mathematics (Pre-engineering) Research Location: CSB/SJU Summary: My research aimed to create a renewable polyurethane from a dihydrocarvide and menthide-based polyamine. Dihydrocarvide is derived from limonene which can be found in orange peels, while menthide comes from mint.
Mike Macken Major: Classical Languages Research Location: CSB/SJU and the Eugene McCarthy Archives at the U of M. Summary: I organized selected texts from Eugene J. McCarthy's archives for an online index, and co-authored a paper with Professor Matt Lindstrom about McCarthy's potential contributions to political discourse today.
