Application due January 5, 2013*

Steps to apply for a Music Scholarship and be considered
for an on-campus audition

Step 1 Submit the online Music Scholarship Application (scroll down to complete application).
Step 2 Have a music teacher or instructor complete the Art, Music and Theater Recommendation Form.
Step 3 Send a standard cassette tape, CD, or MP3 file recording of your playing to [email protected] or to the address listed below.  The entire recording should not exceed six minutes in length. Please see below "Recording and On-campus Audition Guidelines" section to understand what your recording should include.

On-campus Audition Process (see next section for audition preperation details)

  • The CSB/SJU Music Faculty will review all applications and recordings, and selected applicants will be invited to campus for a personal audition and interview.
  • The on-campus audition and interview must be completed before a student can be considered for the scholarship.
  • Fine Art Scholarship Audition Days are February 2 and February 9.  Out of state students may choose to come on the March 9-11 National Fly-in Weekend and audition at that time.
  • Students also invited to interview for our Regents'/Trustees' Scholarship may audition in the afternoon on those scholarship days.

  • Recording and On-campus Audition Guidelines

  • Guitarists will perform one solo classical guitar selection or excerpt of the selection and one selection of your choice in any style, ensemble or solo.
  • Instrumentalists will perform two contrasting selections (similar to state contest repertoire). Students will also be asked to sight-read an excerpt, and should be prepared to perform a three octave (strings), two octave (woodwinds), or one octave (brass) scale through four sharps or flats.
  • Organists will perform a representative work from Bach or his contemporaries and a short Romantic or Modern organ work; in lieu of one piece of repertoire, organists may choose to play two hymns or a hymn and another representative piece of liturgical music. Applicants should contact the music office to arrange an audition on one of our three large concert organs.
  • Percussionists will perform one snare drum and one mallet piece.  Students will also be asked to sight-read an excerpt and should be prepared to perform a two octave scale containing up to four sharps and four flats on a mallet instrument.
  • Pianists will perform two contrasting selections from the classical piano repertoire from the intermediate to advanced levels.

  • Vocalists will perform two contrasting selections from the classical solo vocal repertoire by composers such as Michael Head, Roger Quilter, Aaron Copland, Schubert, Haydn, Handel or the traditional Italian literature.  The audition will also include a brief 12-16 measure sight-singing segment.

  • Please note

  • This application is to be completed by students who plan a continued involvement in music.
  • Current CSB/SJU students are not eligible to apply for fine arts scholarships.
  • Music Scholarships are renewable for 4 years, as long as the student is still participating in a major ensemble at CSB/SJU (Chamber Choir, Men's Chorus, Women's Choir, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, or Jazz Ensemble).  Keyboard (piano and organ) students can fulfill their scholarship requirement through participation in an ensemble of their choice, or by enrolling in MUSC 240-01A or 02A Ensemble Performance where they will accompany for Music Department instrumental and vocal applied studios or vocal ensembles (load is determined in consultation with the keyboard faculty).
  • Students cannot be considered for art, music and theater scholarships until they have been accepted for admission.
  • Students do not have to major in music to receive a scholarship.
  • Students may apply for more than one fine arts scholarship; however, if they are awarded more than one, they may accept only one of them.
