Student Exploration through Alum Mentorship

The new Student Exploration through Alum Mentorship (SEAM) program provides Bennie and Johnnie sophomores with an in-depth, inside look at the working world and the sometimes-unexpected possibilities of a liberal-arts major. The program – designed for students in traditional liberal arts majors – is built around a 3-day job shadow (externship) experience with an optional homestay for those who'd like it.

As a student mentee in the SEAM program, your externship will…

  • illustrate the mission, goals, functions, services and procedures of the participating organization.
  • show you the flow of projects your mentor touches and the way that role fits into the bigger picture of an organization.
  • showcase some of the transferable skills you can develop in a liberal arts major that will lead to professional success.
  • offer chances to conduct informational interviews with professionals to learn more about corporate culture and the paths toward making your mark.

OK, I'm interested, so now what?

When you become a SEAM mentee, you’ll get the chance to open your eyes and expand your horizons. You’ll gain insights and experiences as you begin to learn about yourself and the diverse places your liberal arts education can take you, as well as the steps it will take to get there. Learn more and apply to become a mentee at the link below.

What is an externship? What would involvement in SEAM look like?

This is not an internship. SEAM externships are structured to fit within your spring break week (March 5 - 9, 2018). Due to the shortened timeline, the emphasis is not on project-based work and creating tangible products, but more on observing interactions, reviewing protocols and conducting informational interviews. Curious about who you'd extern with this spring break? Check out the profiles of this year's alumnae/i mentor volunteers by clicking the link below!
