Griffin Schroeder

Griffin Schroeder
Intern name: Griffin Schroeder
Year: Junior
Major (s): Biochemistry
Title: Research Assistant
Place of internship: Southwest University, Beibei, China

How did you find out about the internship and what was the application process like?

My advisor told me about the program, and the application process was online. It required the usual: a cover letter, a résumé, transcript, and 2 professors to complete an online letter of recommendation process.

What were some of the internship highlights?

Being in China as a whole was my biggest highlight. The lab work was both engaging and challenging, but everyday was an adventure in China. I think I miss that the most.

What was a typical day like? What were some of your major responsibilities?

My typical day was going to lab around 9 and leaving around 4 or 5, I then went into the city to find food at my favorite local spots. After that, I always tried to spend time with my lab partner and my other Chinese friends.

What were some of the challenges of your internship?

The lab work was always challenging, but all chemistry is. The language barrier was also difficult at first, but I picked up a little of the language and was able to get by in most situations.

What did you learn?

I learned a lot about myself and about how to carry out experiments independently. Most importantly, I was able to learn a little about and experience a rich culture that very few get to.

What advice would you give other students interested in internships?

I would advise students to try and learn about more than just the subject of their internship, to get outside the lab or workplace and experience something outside of his/her normal setting.
