Heritage Fellows Program

The Heritage Fellows Program, which is open to continuing full-time faculty members from all disciplines, is a grants program that provides professional development opportunities for faculty interested in enhancing their ability to respond to the Catholic and Benedictine traditions upon which the institutions are founded. The focus of the Program is on the fourth and fifth commitments we make to our students in the Coordinate Mission, Values and Vision Statement, which read as follows:

An experience of Benedictine values which fosters attentive listening to the voice of God, awareness of the meaning of one's existence and the formation of community built on respect for individual persons.

The colleges will excel in fostering the understanding and cultivation of the individual and communal vocation of all, informed by the Catholic intellectual tradition, Benedictine values, ecumenism and respect for diverse cultures.

Cultivation of the habit of promoting the common good which is formed by knowledge, faith and an open-hearted response to the needs of others.

The colleges will excel in fostering understanding of Catholic social teachings and consequent action to improve the well-being of the underserved, enhance overall community life and protect the environment.

Two types of grant opportunities are available: course development grants and research grants. Course development grants can focus either on enhancing a current offering or on developing a new course which addresses one or both of the commitments described above. Research grants are intended to provide recipients with an opportunity to deepen and broaden their understanding of the Catholic and Benedictine heritage in order that they are better placed to enhance student learning in these areas. A report on grant activities and expenditures must be filed with the Provost's Office by Monday, November 20, 2006.

Grants of up to $4,000 per project will be available for summer 2006 projects. Funds can be used for workshops or short courses, reading groups, travel, book purchasing, conferences, stipends, or other relevant activities or materials. Faculty may apply individually or in a group for one or both of these grants. Members of the Department of Theology and the School of Theology are not eligible for these grants, since there are funds from the Vocation Project grant specifically designated for the design of the 12 new courses that are part of the revised major. Proposals will be reviewed by a special grants committee, which includes the Provost, Associate Provost, Director of LES, and Director of the Vocation Project, and by the FDRC. Preference in awarding the grants will be given to proposals that will have the greatest impact on student learning in the two mission commitments detailed above. Proposals are due in the Provost's Office no later than Monday, March 13, 2006. Application forms are available in the Provost's Office or online at: http://www.csbsju.edu/vocationproject/Resources.htm.
