Rooted in a 1500-year-old Benedictine tradition

The department of theology offers courses which, for the most part, focus on various aspects of the Christian faith. Complementing the Roman Catholic character of the institutions, the offerings include studies of other Christian traditions, of Judaism, and of other religions of the world.

Through these courses, students explore the perennial questions about the reality of God and the meaning of faith in God.

Program highlights

  • Our rigorous curriculum for theology majors and minors is one of the most comprehensive in the country.
  • College students may take graduate-level theology courses at the Saint John’s School of Theology.
  • Theology majors may get a head start on a master’s degree, which can be completed with only one additional year’s study at the School of Theology.
  • Resources available to students include the largest men’s and women’s Benedictine monasteries in the world, outstanding library holdings in theology, the Youth in Theology/Ministry Institute , the Institute for Ecunmenical & Cultural Research , the Jay Phillips Center for Jewish-Christian Learning, and two programs on the theological exploration of vocation.

Overview of Program

As an academic discipline, Christian theology includes the study of Sacred Scripture, church history, doctrine, spirituality, morality, liturgy, pastoral ministry, and Christianity in relation to other religions.

At CSB/SJU, theology is a vital part of our liberal arts education. It is comprehensive and interdisciplinary. It is the area where mind and heart can meet in an effort to make sense of life’s perplexities and to build a coherent worldview grounded in faith.
