New Initiatives

Here is a list of new initiatives that CSB/SJU have undertaken during the Year of Sustainability.

  • E-billing: All student bills and employee bills will be electronic, saving paper and time.
  • Reduced Directory Printing:  Since the Directory is easily accessible online, staff could opt out of having one printed for them.  1,600 fewer directories were printed this year.
  • Association for Student Affairs at Catholic Colleges and Universities (ASACCU): Hosting their annual conference at CSB/SJU, we gave out bags made of recycled plastic, and promoted sustainability throughout the conference.
  • Bookstores: CSB/SJU Bookstores will be carrying several "sustainable CSB/SJU" logo items for the fall promotion on sustainability on campus. Canvas color basic tote bag, a BPA-free plastic water bottle and recycled cotton short sleeve T-shirts will be available.
  • SJU Eco-House: 6 students will be living in Edlebrock and work to create a sustainable living community (goals and mission to be released in Sept.) Will partner with existing eco-house at CSB to do programming.
  • Focus on the Outdoors: An arboretum program to facilitate outdoor experiences with the First Year Symposium classes.
  • STARS: We will be a charter participant in the Sustainability Tracking and Rating System, a transparent sustainability rating system sponsored by AASHE.
  • Updated Greenhouse Gas Inventories: When our new staff arrive, the Office of Sustainability will be updating our GHG inventories on both campuses.
  • Eco-reps: A program that will hire students to do programs, take surveys, and educate their peers on sustainability in the first year residential halls.
  • New Staff: We welcome our new CSB Director of Sustainability and a second Fellow who will work with physical plant on energy issues.
  • Student Media Programming: Seed grants will be available for students to produce YouTube videos, podcasts, etc. to promote awareness and educate their peers about campus sustainability.
  • Sustainable Orientation: The sustainability office will be talking with new employees, with Orientation Leaders, and RA's.
  • New Academic Building and HCC Building Planning: Our plans continue to progress, the buildings will be signature sustainability buildings.
  • Green computing:  Involves conserving resources by incorporating energy-saving measures in the design and use of systems and hardware on campus.
