Meet Our Graduates

Chris Moldan

"I feel like the sports medicine minor is a great compliment for people who are looking to go into physical therapy, medicine, athletic training, or many other health related fields. It gave me hands-on experience that many students don't necessarily get in school." Read more

Program News

  • Don Fischer's paper, Neuromuscular Training to Prevent Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury in the Female Athlete, was recently accepted for publication in the Strength and Conditioning Journal.
  • Currently, 120 CSB/SJU students are pursuing the minor in sports medicine.
  • According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the employment of fitness workers is expected to grow "much faster than average" through 2014.

Our program . . .

The CSB/SJU minor in Sports Medicine examines sport performance and injury from multiple disciplinary perspectives including:

  • Kinesiology
  • Exercise physiology
  • Motor learning and control
  • Athletic training

Coursework is designed to prepare students for careers in the exercise and fitness field.  More specifically, students will develop knowledge and skills in the areas of physiological assessment, exercise program design, and exercise technique instruction.

These courses will incorporate classroom learning and hands-on practical learning.  Students will be challenged to integrate knowledge and apply that knowledge in "real world" situations.

Program highlights

  • In July 2005, CSB/SJU received a Certificate of Recognition from the NSCA for successfully meeting established educational program criteria in strength and conditioning.
  • Students work with certified athletic trainers, physical therapists, general practitioners and orthopedic surgeons.
  • Many CSB/SJU students participate in internship programs that enhance their coursework.
  • The program has strong relationships with physical therapy schools, including collaboration with the College of St. Catherine.
  • Varsity athletes can be involved in the program while participating in their sport.
