On Thursday, April 10, 2008, Dr. M. Shawn Copeland, associate professor of theology at Boston College, past convener of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium (BCTS) and former president of the Catholic Theological Society of America (CTSA), will speak at the College of Saint Benedict, Saint Joseph, MN.
The evening will begin with a brief concert given by the Saint John's Boys' Choir at 7:30 p.m. in the Gorecki Dining and Conference Center. Copeland will give her presentation, “Black and Catholic: African Roots for Today’s Church,” immediately following. All are welcome to attend. From 9 a.m. until noon on the following day, April 11, Copeland will conduct a workshop, “Black and Catholic: Social and Cultural Challenges in Ministry,” which will explore the practical and pastoral implications of engaging diverse populations and theologies. Workshop participants should register in advance by contacting Bernadette Dunn at (320) 363-2839 or bdunn@csbsju.edu, or by clicking here to register online.
Although central Minnesota has relatively less cultural and racial diversity, many Christian communities are becoming increasingly aware of the changing populations of their churches. Copeland’s presentation and workshop will address cultural and racial diversity from a theological perspective and provide participants with ministerial resources.
The Changing Faces series is sponsored by Saint John’s School of Theology∙Seminary and Companions on a Journey at the College of Saint Benedict, which is funded by a grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. The Changing Faces series seeks to engage more people in transformative approaches to intercultural ministry. The series invites members of local and regional communities, including students, faculty, and staff at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University, to experience all ministry and service as intercultural.
